Through a $50,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation, the Weller Health Education Center has been providing comprehensive, community-based nutrition and fitness programs for children in the Allentown School District with the goal to reduce and prevent childhood obesity and improve overall health and wellness.
As 2009 comes to a close, the Weller Health Education Center has once again published its annual list of “10 Kids’ Health Issues to Watch.” The issues chosen represent a wide range of concerns — some may hit close to home while others may be more far reaching. Of course, these are not the only important issues affecting children’s health — far from it — but the Weller Center feels that in the midst of many, these are notable:
The Weller Health Education Center will honor the following individuals and organizations at its seventh annual Outstanding Friend to Kids Awards ceremony. These awards are given to those that have gone above and beyond to make a significant and positive impact on the health and well-being of children in our region.
Through a $50,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation, the Weller Health Education Center will provide a comprehensive, community-based nutrition and fitness program for predominately Hispanic families and children in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with the goal to reduce and prevent childhood obesity and improve overall health and wellness of Allentown residents.
Through a grant from Verizon Foundation, the Weller Health Education Center will seek to identify the perceptions on dating violence from teens in Monroe, Carbon, Pike and Wayne counties in Pennsylvania and provide programming to reduce and prevent these violent behaviors.
The Weller Health Education Center announces the appointment of Suzy Supnet as Director of Education. Her responsibilities include the supervision of the teaching staff, curriculum development and evaluation, and baseline survey projects.
The Weller Health Education Center has selected the honorees for its seventh annual Outstanding Friend to Kids Awards ceremony. These awards are given to individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond to make a significant and positive impact on the health and well-being of children.
The Weller Health Education Center will present its Health Adventure multimedia programs at the Da Vinci Science Center on Thursdays as part of the science center’s 2009 Summer Series.
Stuffee – the iconic blue-haired ambassador of health who called the Weller Health Education Center home for nine years – will be adopted by the Da Vinci Science Center Thursday, July 9, 2009 following a renewing journey along a hydrogen highway.
The Weller Health Education Center is participating in the 10th annual National Women's Health Week, May 10 –16, 2009 by conducting the program, “Better Start Early,” to nearly 200 female students at Warren County Technical School in Washington, New Jersey, May 13 at 8:15 and 9:45.

The program reviews good female reproductive health and hygiene, breast cancer symptoms and risk factors and the importance of early detection. “Better Start Early” is sponsored by a grant from the Women’s 5K Classic. The press is invited to attend.
The Weller Health Education Center is now accepting nominations for four awards to be presented at the 7th Annual Outstanding Friend to Kids Awards breakfast, October 16, 2009, at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The Weller Health Education Center will help improve children’s dental care in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, thanks to an award of $5,000 from the American Dental Association Foundation’s (ADAF) Samuel Harris Fund.
